Minecraft began as a humble indie project by Swedish developer Markus “Notch” Persson in 2009. Inspired by sandbox classics like Dwarf Fortress and Infiniminer, Notch envisioned a game where players could shape their own worlds using simple blocks.

This pixelated prototype quickly gained traction, leading to the official release in 2011 under Mojang Studios.

What set Minecraft apart was its open-ended gameplay. Players weren’t confined to missions or linear progression—they could explore, build, survive, or create freely. This freedom sparked a revolution in game design, influencing titles like Terraria, Rust, and Valheim.

Over time, Minecraft expanded with updates introducing biomes, mobs, Redstone mechanics, and multiplayer realms. Its acquisition by Microsoft in 2014 accelerated development, bringing cross-platform support and educational editions.

Today, Minecraft boasts over 238 million copies sold, making it the best-selling video game of all time. Its enduring popularity stems from its simplicity, creativity, and community-driven evolution.
